Questions for Dr. Payne

If I were meeting with Dr. Payne, my first question would be to comment on the effectiveness of these strategies with suburban or rural schools?

Secondly, I would ask about the impact on instruction and achievement. Does she see a difference in the overall achievement for schools that implement her strategies as a whole versus those school that only implement in parts?

  1. Good questions! I am also curious about the effectiveness of these strategies on suburban and rural schools. I teach in a rural school and in my class alone I have a big percentage of students on free/reduced lunch. And of course with situations like these the frequency of parental involvement in student work and practices at home is slim. Therefore as educators in this position, the teacher's roles increase and are extensified due to the lack of roles these students are exposed to at home. This big job leads into the second question of the effectiveness of schools and teachers who all participate in all the strategies versus only one or two teachers or all teachers only doing half of the strategies. Good thoughts and something to continually ponder to better our own strategies.

  2. Kelly -- you bring up great points about the effects of only a few teachers participating. It's frustrating when you feel like there are few who honestly care and use the strategies. At the same time, at least some students are getting the benefits, and maybe if enough of us share our ideas we'll get others on-board.

  3. Absolutely, it is disheartening that there are teachers out there that do not have the best interest of their students at heart. If only we had a magic wand...
